This is fairly easy and very short. Was a bit muddy when we hiked it, but not terrible. The spring looked great.

The Wittenberg-Cornell-Slide Trail was a great workout with steep rock ledges. Unfortunately, we hiked on a very cloudy day and were not blessed with the heralded views from Mt. Wittenberg. We parked two cars - one at the WCS Trailhead on Woodland Valley Road and the other at the Phoenicia East Branch Trail on Route 47 - so we did not have to retrace our steps. (Please see the "recommended trips".) Hobo Deli on Route 28 was a great stop for sandwiches for our lunch later on... The trail conditions were a little muddy, but not boot-suckingly so...a little buggy, but not miserable. Not very crowded...Trail is well-blazed.

The highlight of this section is hiking Mt. Greylock. Great views - and the hike up there was not that difficult. I believe this section took us 2-3 days (we were able to do 20 mile days through here when we were thru-hiking). Some very lovely little towns in this area -- Dalton, Cheshire, and Tyringham. We bought hot dogs in Cheshire; everyone we encountered in these small towns were so friendly to us. Very nice memories of trail magic in the form of ice cream sundaes - yum! - from Tom in Dalton. Some amazingly scenic fields and meadows also in this area - easy walking and gorgeous. Upper Goose Pond is a lovely place to have a picnic :)

Awful mosquitoes during this time (very moist). Very lush scenery. While the views were not amazing, there were so many trees, it led to a "green tunnel" effect that was great anyway. We saw porcupines on this section of the AT -- which was really interesting. They did not seem intidimidated by humans and we gave them plenty of space.

This is a very challenging section of the Appalachian Trail. It is like a rollercoast - ups and downs everywhere! This is also a very pretty section of the AT - and a very ritzy section as well. (not a fun place for a thru-hiker trying to find cheap meals and lodging). I believe this section took us 2-3 days to complete...

Walking across this bridge is really incredible - the views, the height - quite frightening, but exhilarating also. Bear Mountain is a beautiful area!

This is a very easy trail which we hiked in order to connect the High Peter's Kill Trail to the Trapps Carriageway. It is very short, well-maintained, and did the connecting job admirably well.

This is a wonderful, moderate hike with pretty views from some serious cliffs. There is some up and down. It is a footpath intended for hiking only. I really enjoyed hiking in the winter there (we saw only a few other hikers). It was not very icy and snowy only in a few spots (we were fine with our hiking boots). Peter's Kill was gorgeous to see with the raging water. Under recommended trips, I put together our loop which includes Shongum Path and Trapps Carriageway. Highly recommended hike!!

The Trapps Carriageway is a very flat, but pretty path which culminates at Awosting Falls (an incredibly gorgeous waterfall). It is truly magnificent especially in the early spring...which is also a time when it is not crowded. The carriageway can also be used by bicyclists, horses, and cross country skiers. The Trapps Carriageway is very wide (at least 8 feet) and is a lovely spot...especially in the winter when it is not very crowded.

The views are very pretty on this hike, and the trail follows a gorgeous quickly flowing stream for much of the way. The trail is fairly well-maintained overall. The lower part is impeccable while on the loop back from the top it does get a bit overgrown. For the mushroom foragers out there, there is an amazing variety and quantity of interesting mushrooms. We know nothing about mushrooms and let them alone, but they were cool to see. We also saw (and ate a few) wild blueberries near the summit. It was fairly buggy out...we forgot our insect repellant...(it's been pretty wet around here lately so...)
