North Slide easier to ascend. Very, very difficult if wet. View is spectacular. Open ledges 100 feet across require caution and some intricate foot work. Tall cairn at top of slide marks exit off ledges to trail to the summit on the left. Kate Sleeper Trail enters South Slide on the left and continues on to Whiteface.

Dicey's Mill is an engaging spot beside Wonalancet River and bordered with huge boulders. A good spot for picnic and or a dip. Trail begins to ascend steeply along ridge immediately after mill site. The Shelters as seen on the AMC maps are no longer in existence. There does look like there are tent sites near summit. Also near old Camp Rich is a mountain stream and good place for refilling water jars.

First waterfall soon after cutoff and then at base of rather steep descent a pedestrian suspension bridge over another waterfall. Continue to pass over several streams and fast flowing brooks. After 3rd waterfall and final water source, steep ascent and then steep descent to Lowe's Bald Spot spur trail and then to the auto road. Feels like a long 1.8 miles but varied terrain and lots of water.

Heading North on the Gulfside Trail the Cornice trail veers off to the left. Passed this trail there is a grassy plateau called Monticello Lawn on which there used to be a croquet set for hiker's to enjoy. From here, the Jefferson Loop leaves the Gulfside Trail and ascends moderately to a 6 foot cairn just short of the true summit which is on the intersecting Caps Ridge Trail.

High winds and misty along trail. Visibility poor much of the way but trail well marked with cairns. Magnificent views into valleys. Crosses the cog railroad near Mt. Washington summit and can hear the whistle throughout the day. Tundra vegetation and open exposed slopes. Mt. Clay has 3 summits and adds 300 feet of climbing. 8 foot cairn atop Mt. Jefferson with true summit on rocks just above cairn. Steep descent of Jefferson Loop trail back to Gulf Side. Just before ascent to Mt Adams is a convergence of Gulfside, Great Gully, Spur and Lowe's Path called Thunderstorm Junction marked by a tall cairn. Ascent to Mt Adams is steep and a rock scramble but descent is even more challenging and longer and its base is at Star Lake and the Madison Hut. Magnificent views of Mt. Madison from Adams summit.

Much open travel above treeline with magnificent views. Thru scrub and alpine vegetation. Bilberries and sedge along the way. Open view to Mt. Washington Hotel just after Mt. Pierce. Hear the cog rail road along the way and see the auto road to Mt. Washington. Mt. Eisenhower loop consists of switchbacks so is not as steep as may appear. Loop adds .2 miles and 300 feet. Mt. Franklin small incline to left with small cairn at summit. There is no trail marker to the summit. Double peaked Mt Monroe is a rcok scramble but well marked by cairns. Steep descent to Lake in the CloudsHut. Lake affords refreshing swim. Descent to Mt. Washington was in 50-60 mph winds and 34 degrees and very poor visibility. Weather can be notoriously bad and signs are posted at the Lake of the Clouds to warn hikers. Path itself is rocky but well marked with cairns and over half is rock steps making ascent fairly easy until last 5 - 10 minutes which is a rock scramble.
