I've Hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2001, and often do day hikes in New Hampshire and New York. |

A really nice day trip, two summits and some amazing views of Squam lake. The trail also goes near some interesting caves and cliffs. Not a very difficult hike.

Minnewaska

A beautiful day hike in Minnewaska, in southern New York. The return trip goes along a cliff edge with continuous breathtaking views of the hudson valley.

Franconia Ridge
|
Some of the best views to be had in New Hampshire. The ridge walk feels like it is very narrow at times with the world falling off on both sides. It really feels like you are on top of the world. The entire loop can take up to 8 hours, so be prepared for bad weather, bring plenty of food and water.

A Great Day Hike From NYC
|
Take Metro North from Grand Central to the Breakneck Ridge train stop (Hudson Line). Hike up Breakneck Ridge, then across to Bull Hill, and finally down into Cold Spring. This hike provides great views in all directions, especially of the Hudson River.
The hike is fairly short, but pretty rigorous (I wouldn't recommend doing it if it is wet outside because the rocks are probably very slippery.)
From the end of the trail, hike into the village of Cold Spring, where you can catch a good meal before grabbing the train back home.
Cold Spring has good dining for everyone. Cathryn's has upscale Italian dining, both the Depot and Henry's have good beer and burgers, and there is even good pizza and Chinese in town.

The Peekamoose-Table Trail is a moderate hike in the Southern Catskills. While the views from the summits are not that exciting, the hike is worth doing for the views from other parts of the trail. This would be a great hike for the autumn. This was a two car hike. We parked the first car on Denning Road and started on the 1.2 miles of the Pheonicia East Branch Trail. This is a very easy trail (actually, it's more like a road) which is not that attractive due in large part to the logging efforts along the road. It was also quite buggy and muddy when we went (it's been quite rainy lately). The hiking improved after we began the Peekamoose-Table Trail. The trail narrows and it becomes a very peaceful walk in the woods. While the summits of Peekamoose and Table Mountains were non-events, the walk is very pretty in its own right. Also, there are a couple of excellent views (especially mile 5.7 -- gorgeous!!) which do not coincide with the summits. We ended the hike at the second car which we parked at Peekamoose Road (County 42). All in all, this hike would probably be quite spectacular (especially the view points) in the autumn with the many deciduous trees. I imagine the hike will be filled with amazing foliage scenery. For the other times of the year, it's a lovely walk in the woods especially if you've not done the hike before...

Wide, paved road brings hikers back to the parking area at Norrie State Park to the Dutchess County Environmental Center.

Located right off of Route 9 in Staatsburg, (between Hyde Park and Rhinebeck in Dutchess County), we parked at the Environmental Center. The Blue Blazed Trail was very pretty although it does not provide the sweeping views of the Hudson River that the White Blazed Trail does. It is a wider, more direct way back to the parking area, however. It also passes by some very interesting sights. There is an incredible old monument dedicating a playground in the memory of Lewis Gordon Norrie from 1923. We also viewed the incredible remains of what were some of the lesser building's of the Norrie estate. This was a great way to return after taking the White Blazed Trail along the Hudson River. Unfortunately, there is a fair amount of litter on the trail...but it still is a very beautiful and rewarding hike.

Fabulous, easy hike along the Hudson River. We parked at the Environmental Center, walked along the road for a little bit, and then turned left onto a white-blazed footpath. I saw two great blue herons there! The trails creeps along the Hudson River providing sweeping views (especially good for winter hiking) of the River, the Esopus Lighthouse, and eventually Mills Mansion. It is a very rewarding hike. The only downside to hiking at Norrie State Park in Staatsburg (which is located on Route 9 between Hyde Park and Rhinebeck in Dutchess County) is that there is a fair amount of litter. Next time I hike in that area, I will bring a garbage bag to help out...Visiting the park in the winter was lovely, also, because we only encountered two other hikers in the 3-4 hours we were there -- very peaceful! (Probably not nearly so quiet in the summertime) The trail is fairly narrow (sometimes only a couple feet wide right next to the Hudson River) so I would not recommend biking or skiing there (although the blue-blazed trail would probably work for that) Returning by the blue-blazed Trail (simply turn right when the white-blazed trail ends) was great (see Recommended Trips).

Trail was a little wet in spots, but not really muddy. Cold fall day gave for some interesting views at the summit, with the mostly dark sky spotted with rays from the near-setting sun. Took us a bit more than an hour each way.

Great weather. There were some volunteers at the top, so the fire tower was open. Clear conditions so the views from the firetower were amazing. Side note: Cell phones don't work anywhere near this hike except at the summit.
